Carlitox

Carlitox smiled...they would be able to skip the landbridge. This power flowing from the boy was unique, and he eagerly embraced it and harnessed it as his own. He closed his eyes, lending his soft grey flow of magic to the golden stream of Ethan's. The golden storm slowed, the grey bleeding into it, then shifted faster and faster around the two. It was taming the raw power coming from the two of them into something useable. Carlitox did it skillfully, Then, as if a god had opened its mouth and swallowed the two of them, they disappeared off the island. The land they came to when the spinning stopped was familiar only to Carlitox. Strange, alien air carried odd scents on the wind. They stood on a beach of black sand, with the deep green waves behind them lapping at their ankles. A mass of trees, nearly a wall, stood defiantly across a small field. And betwixt them and the forest, was a group of very strange creatures. They looked like humans, but their body language was that of a pack of wolves. Their fingernails stretched nearly six inches, their bodies were streamlined like greyhounds, and their arms were as long as their legs. They gazed curiously at the two, but didn't dare approach. Carlitox heard a few scattered growls and shifting. Caralathians. Usually very intelligent creatures, much along the lines of humans themselves...in fact they used to be human. Bitten by another caralathian and transformed into what the shar'taal and the boy saw now, they were generally aggressive. By their attitudes, Carlitox theorized they were near Persian's land. A slave owner elevated to the title of warlord...and not the nicest person to be around. "Caralathians. Keep close." Carlitox told Ethan, and started to ascend the bank onto the grass near the hunters.

Ethan has frequented teleportation, and was familiar with the after-effects of massive amounts of energy being forced from one's body; most times, he transversed space and time, though it was rare, for such a journey often leaves him exhausted for days. But as he flexed his magical muscles more and more, he could feel them growing stronger, and this time, he wasn't nearly as depleted. The maelstrom warped about them in a pulchritudinous display of grey and gold, and his countenance was upturned to the heavens expectantly; the column of light they created arced up to the sky like a thrown lance, piercing through the ceiling of overhanging branches and leaves to stretch further. Some clouds might've been pushed aside, torn apart by this prowess that was a fine combination of mortal, immortal, and Nature. But this light's end would signify the departure of man and boy from this land, leaving traces of magic on the ground like footprints, or in the air like transparent smoke, to be carried away for some astute stranger to recognize. It felt as if his body was dragged in all directions and slammed into walls multiple times, and he clutched onto his companion's hand fervently, with eyes thrown wide to witness the spectrum of colors. First everything was a verdant green, then a black darkness, and alas a mixture of multitudinous hues. His bare feet touched ground, and he staggered, knees almost giving way under him. Black sand sank under his weight, and his gaze, at first glazed over from the insane whirling, slowly focused. He sniffed first at the strange air, and then allowed his orbs to sweep over the wall of trees, before pausing upon some adjacent creatures. He felt a peculiar sensation of dry sediments and moist liquid, so that as he bent in examination to dip his arm until his elbow was in the green waters, he released Carlitox's hand. Cupping water and sand in his small palms, he allowed them to crawl through from between his fingers as if it was as sifter. He peered about them in wonder, and once again squinted at the creatures that so resembled human beings, and yet their behaviors told a different tale. "Looks like werewolves to me." Ethan shattered the silence and straightened, then lifted an appendage uncouthly and waved it in a gesture of greeting. A wide grin was plastered on his thin face, and his dark eyes shone in delight, as if he believed this as a chance to make friends. At his ally's warning, the arm fell abruptly back to his side, and his weight shifted uncomfortably whilst a frown adorned his features; he was a foreigner to this land, and his ignorance could elicit a handful of problems. Although he didn't care much for impediments, for he took it in stride, he was not so interested in endangering his companion. Running his digits through his hair in a customary gesticulation of luck, he edged closer to Carlitox, almost bending his knees as if he was prepared to make a dash if necessary. He probably appeared quite silly, for he whispered as if they shared a secret, with eyes flicking about warily. "Where're we going now?"

"Nothing like werewolves, but twice as dangerous." Carlitox warned. "There's no need for that sort of sneaky postulating.." he took Ethan's damp hand in his own. "You wish to focus your powers, yes? Come with me. It is a bit of a walk to my people, but with me you should be safe." He began walking along the bank of the water, away from the caralathians. They gazed after him, snorted, then returned to lazing in the sun. Stupid shar'taal. If not for him they probably would have made a quick meal out of Ethan. The grass was soft under Carlitox's bare feet, and the smells on the wind were of the sea and the forests beyond it...this was inherently familiar. At the same time the air was a bit thicker, heavier almost with oxygen than the air in Avalon. The sky was a deep azure, with whisps of clouds struggling to cover the sun. It was late spring after all; here the four season were more like two. Both summer and spring were unbearably hot and humid, and the winters were cold and unforgiving as the fall. The land would be alien to Ethan...the trees were different, more twisted with the limbs going in all directions. They hid hosts of insects and birds in their branches, or a sleeping caralathian from the pack they had just passed There were also some of the oddest creatures any human had ever seen deeper in the jungle, even though they weren't making immediate appearances. Carlitox hungered for home. Bringing a mortal wasn't exactly a sin, but it was frowned upon in the same way bringing home a homeless dog or cat. They weren't desired but merely tolerated. Carlitox's kind were scholars. That bred ignorance in some, wordliness in others, but in his clan it was mostly arrogance. While they would be polite to his face, they wouldn't give Ethan the time of day. But perhaps once they saw his abilities, that he wasn't like any other human...perhaps they would give him a chance? The child desperately needed to focus his powers, and once he did he could become strong in the ways of magic. Carlitox just needed help in getting him there. Being surrounded by his peers and even some who hadn't gone through the Changing could help realize Ethan's full potential. But for now, getting there was half the battle. It was at least thirty miles north, along the coast a bit then taking a sharp turn into the trees where nastier things than caralathians lurked.

Ethan has never come across a werewolf himself, but the tales depicted them as vicious creatures under the full moon, devouring and rending human flesh whenever possible. If these creatures were twice as dangerous, there was cause to be wary. He was suddenly glad that he wasn't traveling alone, because he'd surely get attacked, for his malnourished, bony body was bait enough. Straightening from the bent posture, he shook himself before his muscles loosened, and once again he was reposed. Providing a curt nod to Carlitox's question, he gripped lightly upon his companion's hand, as a child would whenever first led into somewhere he wasn't familiar with. Breathing a sigh of relief as they edged away from the caralathians, Ethan allowed himself to admire the scenery about him, burning the picturesque images of this land to his mind, so that he'd remember it forever. Carlitox's homeland seemed the epitome of nature, for even the wind carried the smell of the sea and forests. But the difference was that it was heavier, as if something intangible weighed upon it, and as Ethan drew breath, it gave him an uncomfortable sensation, though he'd soon get used to it no doubt. The sun seemed like an enemy to the soil, for clouds were attempting to conceal it entirely behind their puffy surface, and the boy could only feel an insignificant amount of its warmth. His attention swarmed to the trees that covered the terrain, and his head canted aside thoughtfully. Indeed, the limbs stuck out in all directions, as if each arm was trying to touch the sky before its brethren could. But those saplings possessed more vivacity than those of Avalon, as if they'd extend further any moment to bask in the heat of the glorious sun any moment. The life forms cooperated and worked as one, and those trees seemed like a home, welcoming anyone that so happens to pass by. The beauty of this land's nature mesmerized the boy, and though he had the ability to manipulate the geography, he was humbled by the sight before him. As the child ruminated over the matter, a notion came to him. Just like most people, would the inhabitants of this world not accept him? Foreigners are often discouraged, if not an affront. Without his companion, would he be attacked by a mass of belligerent archmages? This disturbed the boy, and as they trod together, with steps that seemed to match perfectly in rhythm, he gazed upon Carlitox. There was an unspoken question on his face, and he considered it for another moment before shattering the silence that reigned between them, "Would they accept me?" A frown was forming upon his lips, and those slender brows furrowed. Perhaps Ethan was worried for his own safety, but he also was anxious for his companion; if Carlitox was caught between his own people and a human boy, who would he pick? If the latter, it'd surely damage his position, and the boy wasn't interested in endangering his new friend. But he was determined, and the resolve upon his features, as strong as tempered steel, shewed that he refused to be dismissed so readily. He would prove that he was worth teaching; he must seize his fate into his own hands. Most are often ignorant of the opportunities hovering before their very eyes, but not this boy. He was one to grapple with chance and emerge victorious. He was not arrogant, but knew he was an aspiring mage, and surely that'd be enough to convince the others of his kind. He simply had to prove their former beliefs wrong, and though that sounded easy, it would no doubt be difficult. But he was resolute about bypassing impediments, stronger and smarter. But for now, they must continue on their journey; this land was composed of strange, and probably malevolent, entities. He knew of the magnitude of the task before him, but was left undaunted. He considered this a challenge, and the price to pay for greatness. If he intended to master his magick, he must take a route of no-shortcuts. Nodding to himself in acquiescence to his thoughts, his gaze roamed far ahead. It was as if he could see the distant future, and with a smile that pressed his lips together to a thin line, they continued on. If ambush comes their way, they'd simply have to overcome it. It was a battle that Ethan had to win.
